Typesetting Errors

2024. 02. 01.

Typesetting errors are printing errors caused by the incorrect insertion of letters, numerals or decorative elements. When the error affects the denomination, it is often described as a denomination error. The error may occur throughout a sheet, at several sheet positions or on a single stamp position only.

Main types of typesetting error

  • substitution of one letter or character for another;
  • incorrect denomination, such as the 50/35 error on the 1913 Turul issue or the 600/800 error on the 1924 Harvester issue;
  • missing letters, for example inscriptions such as “illér”, “fil ér” or “forin” on 1946 postage-due stamps;
  • transposed letters, such as “fiéllr”;
  • a letter inserted sideways or upside down;
  • use of an incorrect typeface or letter size;
  • incorrect insertion of spacing material, which may shift a denomination or other printed element.
